Redesigning Street Lights Using Materiality and Feminist Principles
Street lights represent an important part of urban infrastructure that can impact
safety, security, and our sense of well-being.
In this project, me and my team explored a speculative future of lightning. The design and implementation of future street lighting
systems provide an opportunity to explore theories such as feminist and materiality perspectives. Materiality perspectives made the design lead towards non-human inclusion, while feminist perspectives challenged the way we experience streets during night. In this project, we highlighted the similarities and differences between the two approaches. During the design
process, we found that the most significant differences between the two street light designs were
how the users feelings and overall experience were considered.
